June 19th, 2023—Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” commemorates the ending of slavery within the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to deliver news to the remaining enslaved African Americans that Republican President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, ensuring their freedom.

African American abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass, were leading Republicans in the fight for emancipation as well as women’s and Black suffrage.

Douglass said, “I am a Republican, a black, dyed-in-the-wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress.”

The Republican Party of New Mexico celebrates Juneteenth, a day of liberty and justice that affirms our commitment to the promise instilled within our Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal.”
