REPUBLICAN PARTY OF NEW MEXICO STATEMENT ON SEN. HEINRICH’S “SCHOOLS AND STATE BUDGETS CERTAINTY ACT”

Albuquerque, May 13—The following is a statement from RPNM Chairman Steve Pearce on Sen. Heinrich’s “Schools and State Budgets Certainty Act.” The bill was introduced today.

“It’s disappointing that Sen. Heinrich is supposed to represent the citizens of New Mexico but it seems he wants to kill off one of the state’s most important industries. This bill will cut off the main lifeline to our state budget, devastating our economy and costing thousands of jobs. With less oil production, gas prices will skyrocket, and Americans will pay the price at the pumps. This is bad policy. Oil and gas companies and other related industries will move jobs to other states, and those states will reap the financial benefits. In addition, Heinrich's plan would mean the federal government would supplement revenue for states like New Mexico, but it’s unclear where that money would come from or how much would readily be available. This legislation is not well thought out and will have dangerous and harmful consequences.”
