SEPTEMBER 4, 2025 – Statement from Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has once again announced yet another special legislative session, set to begin October 1st. This marks the seventh special session under her tenure—and yet, the most urgent challenges facing New Mexicans remain unaddressed.

While the Governor blames Washington and points fingers at President Trump, the reality is thatthe hardships New Mexicans face today are the result of years of failed leadership here at home. New Mexico has had billions of dollars in record revenues during this administration, and instead of building stability, prioritizing healthcare access, or addressing food insecurity, those resources were wasted on short-term political projects. If rural healthcare, affordable coverage, and food assistance were truly the priorities she claims, they would have been addressed years ago—not just now, under the cover of “emergency.”

Calling lawmakers back for political theater will not fix the systemic problems the Governor has ignored for nearly two terms. New Mexicans are tired of crisis-driven leadership, tired of excuses, and tired of being put last.

What New Mexicans need is real leadership:
·       Accountability for the billions already spent without long-term solutions.
·       A plan for sustainable healthcare and workforce development, not one-time bailout funds.
·       A commitment to public safety and behavioral health reform, not just reactionary announcements.

This special session is not about protecting New Mexicans—it is about protecting the Governor’s failed legacy. New Mexicans see through it, and they are ready for change
It is time for leadership that represents New Mexicans first, not politics first. The people of this state deserve real solutions, not more finger-pointing and short-term fixes. The change New Mexico needs will not come from another special session—it will come when New Mexicans change the direction of their state by changing the way they vote.
