ALBUQUERQUE, DECEMBER 23—Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela gives the following statement:
“President Biden’s decision to commute the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates is a disgraceful act that undermines justice and disregards the suffering of the victims and their families. While he selectively spares three individuals who committed heinous acts of terrorism and hate, his broad commutation of other death row sentences sends a dangerous message that the most brutal crimes no longer warrant the ultimate accountability. This move is an affront to law-abiding Americans and the victims of these murderers, whose lives were stolen in acts of violence that shocked our nation. Justice delayed is justice denied—and for these families, the president’s actions reopen wounds and rob them of the closure that the judicial system promised. The Biden Administration’s soft-on-crime approach erodes trust in our institutions and shows a disturbing pattern of prioritizing criminals over the safety and justice owed to innocent citizens. The Republican Party of New Mexico will continue to stand with victims and advocate for policies that protect our communities and honor the sanctity of life. The American people deserve leadership that values accountability and ensures that justice prevails over political ideology.”
