QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS IN CITY FUNDING SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED TO MORE APPROPRIATE PLACES TO HELP CITIZENS AND COMMUNITY
Albuquerque, May 26—The Republican Party of New Mexico is dismayed that the Albuquerque City Council last week voted to approve a massive $1.4 billion spending plan that increases spending by a whopping $200 million and includes $250,000 for Planned Parenthood, which was added in a hastily-approved last-minute amendment. RPNM opposes this reprehensible decision and applauds the courageous votes by Councilors who voted against the amendment and the inflated budget. Every city department was fattened, despite no improvements in crime, homelessness or unemployment. This is simply poor city leadership. New Mexico has one of the nation’s most radical abortion laws, and the state is known as the late-term abortion capital of the country. RPNM’s position on abortion is crystal clear: the Party believes in the sanctity of life and will always fight to protect the unborn. RPNM believes this $250,000 could be used more wisely to help the community, not promote a progressive pro-abortion agenda. “This allocation of funds that will go to Planned Parenthood demonstrates that this Council is not acting on behalf of its citizens,” said Angie Smith, Chair of Roosevelt County Republican Party and President of New Mexico Right to Life. “RPNM believes this money should go to something that truly helps the people of Albuquerque and its community. The money should be going to places like drug and rehabilitation services, mental health services or fighting crime. In this sense, City Council, as a whole, has failed its City.” |
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662. |
Hoo boy, what silly whining by GOP leaders about Albuquerque’s city budget! They don’t claim that the council doesn’t have the money, and they don’t claim that it’s not the council’s duty to spend money the best way they know. Wouldn’t a Republican majority do the same?
They complain about less-than-one-percent OF THE INCREASE ($250,000) going to Planned Parenthood! Everyone knows that poor and vulnerable women need PP while rich women can get whatever they want without it, so why begrudge that paltry amount to people who need it. It seems hard-hearted, with abortion as an excuse.
The party of life needs to be consistent and support people after they are born, maybe even by considering sensible firearms restrictions. Yet Mr. Pearce said in response to the Uvalde shooting that “gun control is not the answer.” That’s hard-hearted too.
Spiteful criticism of a well-intentioned city council is the kind of self-pity and hypocrisy that will keep the Grand Old Party in the minority in New Mexico in November.
