Albuquerque, May 20—The following is a statement from Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce on today’s ruling by a Louisiana federal judge temporarily stopping the Biden Administration from ending Title 42: “This is welcome news from the courts. Revoking Title 42 would only lead to a surge of migrants entering our nation without proper health checks, endangering our communities. Many of those crossing pose serious health risks. Each month hundreds of thousands of migrants continue to pour into states at the southern border. The Biden Administration has created this humanitarian crisis, and our own governor in New Mexico refuses to act, saying there’s ‘no crisis’ at the border. Republicans and many national Democrats oppose ending Title 42, knowing this will exacerbate this calamity. I commend the federal judge on this ruling.” |

How about a statement on the report about sex abuse in the Southern Baptist Church? Do you let them slide because they vote Republican?
Hypocrisy by its leaders helps keep the Grand Old Party in the minority in New Mexico.
Most voters hope politicians will find sensible ways to deal with the public health issue and the fact that many people are trying to immigrate to our great country. We see the need to keep control of the situation, but also want to treat desperate people humanely–like Christians, if you will.
This ruling by a Trump-appointed judge was based on a technicality, not on the merits–legal or medical–so it is not the last word and it just puts off solving the problems. It is likely to be overturned.
A “crisis at the border” is felt almost exclusively by people who feel sorry for themselves, including Democrats up for reelection in swing states. We need to get beyond fear and self-pity and urge Congress to reform the whole immigration system.
