Albuquerque, May 2—This week marks the beginning of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce released the following statement: “During May we honor and recognize the history, cultures and achievements of the many Americans who came from the Asian continent and Pacific islands. Their contributions to our nation and their many sacrifices must be acknowledged, and we pay tribute to these proud Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. They have enriched our nation and our culture, and continue to play a vital role in government, business and all walks of life. Their history is one of resilience and determination to fight for basic rights.” |
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662. |
Oh wow, Americans from Asia and the Pacific Islands must be thrilled with this rousing recognition of their worth!
Not surprisingly, the statement lacks specifics, such as condemnation of hate crimes against Asian-Americans, acknowledgement of damage we did testing atomic and hydrogen bombs in the Marshall Islands (Bikini anyone?), or other legacies of our imperialism in the Philippines and Oceania.
Mr. Curtis and Mr. Pearce probably support Yvette Herrell’s vote against Senate Bill 937 which became law and requires the Justice Department to speed investigations of hate crimes against Asian and Pacific Islanders. They had the opportunity to condemn it here but did not mention it.
The blandness of their statement amounts to hypocrisy, which will help keep the Grand Old Party in the minority in New Mexico.
