OCTOBER 16, 2025Statement from Chairwoman Amy Barela on Day 16 of the Government Shutdown

Radical Left Democrats have been barreling the country toward a government shutdown unless they get their $1.5 trillion wish list of demands. The same party that stands for open borders, violent crime, and extreme gender ideology is now holding the paychecks of our service members, veterans, firefighters, and disaster relief workers hostage — all to advance their radical political agenda.

President Donald J. Trump and Republicans are committed to keeping the government open with a clean funding extension — protecting the livelihoods of hardworking Americans and ensuring that vital services continue. Democrats, meanwhile, are playing political games with the American people’s paychecks.

It’s particularly ironic — and deeply hypocritical — that these very same Democrats once decried government shutdowns as “reckless,” “dangerous,” and “devastating.” Their own words tell the story!
Now, those same Democrats are doing exactly what they once condemned — threatening the economy, endangering national security, and undermining America’s strength on the global stage.

asked what they’re even fighting for, Democrat leaders couldn’t give an answer. While air traffic controllers and federal workers worry about feeding their families, radicals like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez respond with rants instead of solutions. “Crazy Bernie” Sanders even called ICE operations — which remove dangerous criminals from our streets — “a movement toward authoritarianism.”

The American people see through this hypocrisy. Democrats are not fighting for the people — they’re fighting to score political points against President Trump.
Republicans will continue working to keep America open, safe, and strong. Democrats need to stop the blame games, drop their radical demands, and put the American people first.
