OCTOBER 13, 2025RPNM Chairwoman Amy Barela’s Statement on Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a day many of us have grown up recognizing as a point in our history, marking Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas and symbolizing exploration and discovery. Over time, Indigenous Peoples Day has also come to be celebrated on this same day, honoring the rich history, culture, and lasting contributions of Native peoples.

Here in New Mexico, Indigenous Peoples Day holds special importance. Our state is home to many Native communities whose traditions, resilience, and contributions have helped shape not only our state but our entire nation. It’s unfortunate that efforts to change the messaging around these observances have caused controversy, when in truth, both deserve recognition. We can acknowledge Columbus Day as a part of our shared history while also celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day as a tribute to the first peoples of this land and all they continue to bring to our society.
