NEW MEXICO AUGUST 26- Chairwoman Amy Barela responded to an Albuquerque Journal request fo comment regarding the possible loss in funding:

“The Republican Party of New Mexico is sounding the alarm on the dangers posed by issuing Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) to individuals who cannot understand the English language or our traffic laws. This is not just a matter of compliance—it is a matter of life and death.

When drivers on our highways are unable to read road signs, communicate with law enforcement, or follow critical safety instructions, accidents happen. These accidents endanger New Mexicans, place unnecessary burdens on first responders, and put every motorist at risk.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has made it clear: states that fail to uphold federal English proficiency standards will face the loss of vital federal funding. If New Mexico continues down this reckless path, federal highway dollars will be pulled—not as a threat, but as a direct response to unsafe practices that have already led to preventable accidents.

This is about making Americans safe again. New Mexicans deserve roads that are not only maintained with federal funds but also safe from
preventable tragedies. RPNM demands that state leaders immediately
return to compliance with federal CDL requirements to protect both lives and taxpayer resources”
