| NEW MEXICO AUGUST 25- As New Mexicans, we know firsthand the consequences of failed policies like cashless bail. In our state, eliminating bail opened the door for repeat offenders to cycle in and out of the justice system with no accountability. Crime worsened, victims were left without justice, and our communities became less safe. The system as it stands is broken. Not only did crime increase under cashless bail, but we also lost the vital role of bail bondsmen—professionals who provided accountability and ensured defendants returned to court. Without that safeguard, taxpayers have shouldered the burden, paying more as law enforcement and the courts repeatedly deal with the same offenders. President Trump’s executive order reflects what many Americans, including New Mexicans, have long known: public safety must come first. This order takes decisive action to restore accountability, protect law-abiding citizens, and stop the revolving door of crime that undermines both safety and trust in the justice system.
