APRIL 21—Late Sunday night the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis had passed away. In response to this significant loss to the global Catholic community including many in New Mexico’s Catholic population, Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela issued the following statement:
“The Republican Party of New Mexico extends our heartfelt sympathies to the Catholic community in New Mexico and around the world mourning the passing of Pope Francis. We recognize the profound spiritual significance of his leadership to millions in the Catholic faith and join in prayer, asking for God’s comfort and peace during this time of loss and transition. Additionally, we acknowledge President Donald J. Trump’s official proclamation honoring Pope Francis, ordering the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff at the White House, on all public buildings and grounds, at military posts and naval stations, and at U.S. embassies until sunset on the day of Pope Francis’ interment.”
