ALBUQUERQUE, JULY 13—Today, State Senator Antonio “Moe” Maestas (D-Bernalillo) responded with an insensitive tweet on X under a post showing footage of President Trump’s assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
Senator Maestas’ tweet has since been deleted, but we’ve included the screenshots below.
The senator’s response was in the comments under the following post where he diminished the severity of the incident and added a laughing emoji.
He has since posted a tweet apologizing for his “spontaneous earlier post” only after receiving criticism for his insensitivity.
The Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce issued the following statement:
“It is unacceptable that Senator Maestas’ first response to an assassination attempt, where the former President was shot at, narrowly missing his head, one person was killed and another severely injured, was to make a joke and downplay it. He has demonstrated that he does not have the character or discernment worthy of a New Mexico Senator. He apologized only after being criticized and justified his tweet by claiming he didn’t know the President had been struck. That is a weak excuse. New Mexicans deserve representation that acknowledges the gravity of this situation and will address it with the seriousness and dignity it deserves. Senator Maestas should step down after making such a disgraceful post.”
Was the Shooter a Republican or a Democrat?
Sensible voters don’t share “lobogabe”‘s opinion that the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump was “the most disgusting thing” this country has faced, more disgusting, presumably, than the Civil War and successful assassinations of sitting presidents just for starters.
Perhaps Senator Maestas didn’t call out “lobogabe”‘s outrageous claim gently enough, but he was right to call it out.
Mr. Pearce, did you call out Mr. Trump when he said we should take three days to get over the shooting of the little girl in Iowa?
January 6th 2021, the insurrection at the capital and attempted autocoup were much worse.
The Communist democrats work for Satan. His post is not surprising.
Trump has become a false god to many Republicans. When we excuse his every ill deed and accept his lies above the truth we are putting our faith in a false god.
If you have made Trump an idol in your life it’s not to late to repent.
Imagine sitting at the Judgement Seat before God and all the generations of mankind and have to give an account of our blind devotion to Donald.
These are trying times that are testing our characters. Donald Trump has come to offer the Church power, if only we will bow down and worship him.
Wow, you are one crazy idiot. You have a very warped view of the fervor around Trump. I’m not voting for the media portrayal of Trump, my decision is based on the job he did as President.
MAGA is a cult and it’s devotion to Trump is not based in reality.
Steve, we all lived through Trump’s Presidency but only some of us remember what actually happened.
Let me remind you of a few highlights of Trump’s term:
During Trump’s term 1,000,000 Americans died of Covid, while the Commander and Chief spent his time undermining public safety and denying the problem.
During Trump’s term the unemployment rate skyrocketed and millions of Americans lost their job and got on public assistance/unemployment.
Under Trump’s Term Republicans in Congress racked up trillions of dollars in debt to fund the corrupt PPP program and other government handouts.
Trump lost in 2020 because millions of Americans braved a pandemic to vote and throw him out for his many many failures.
Then Trump and the GOP have been lying about losing the 2020 election ever since. THE BIG LIE has lead to many instances of real world violence before the assassination attempt. They even under Trump’s direction marched to the Capitol on J6 to try and stop the peaceful transfer of power, shameful and disgusting.
You are in a cult Steve, repent before it’s to late.
