Albuquerque, June 19—Today is Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday that celebrates freedom. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of formerly enslaved African Americans. On June 19th, 1865 Union soldiers brought news of freedom to the enslaved in Galveston, Texas. The date marks the end of slavery and a turning point in our nation.

The Emancipation Proclamation has allowed African Americans the opportunity to pursue the American Dream, to live in a free society and afforded them the power to vote.

The Republican Party and Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. The GOP will always stand for freedom and liberty.

The following is a statement on Juneteenth from Jewll Powdrell, an African American and member of the Republican Party of New Mexico’s Executive Committee:

“This date is an important part of our country’s history, and it must be honored. History has shown and continues to show that until Black Americans change our thought processes, we will continue to endure the same circumstances as we have over the past 200 years. Juneteenth carries with it the responsibility of all Black Americans to once again focus on the fact that the law does not require you to vote, but voting is a very important part of our democracy. Voting is a right that as Americans we should all exercise. The vote that you cast should reflect the ideology, beliefs, and moral justice that you ascribe to. As Black Americans, we must vote for those leaders who support the hopes and dreams of our forefathers, a society in which equality and justice are for all Americans.”
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662.
