Albuquerque, June 17—This week Gov. Lujan Grisham formally asked Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to delay any planned or expanded efforts to transport migrants to New Mexico—a request that comes as Lujan Grisham continues to fail New Mexicans with her lack of action regarding border security. Lujan Grisham and President Biden have endangered the lives of Americans who live in states along the southern border, as hundreds of thousands of migrants flood into our nation with no criminal background or health checks. With Title 42 about to be lifted, there will be another wave of migrants that will pour into New Mexico and beyond. May border numbers show 239,416 illegal immigrants were apprehended trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This is the highest one-month total in DHS history. It’s a 32% increase over May 2021 and a 300% increase from the average number of May apprehensions during the Trump administration. More than 3.5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border since Biden took office. “Gov. Lujan Grisham’s sudden interest in the border and her request to Washington is political expediency,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “She’s running scared in her reelection bid, and she knows she’s failed her constituents by taking no action to protect her citizens along the border and neighboring communities. This governor knows she is vulnerable on the border crisis issue, and her request to delay the influx of migrants is obvious political theater. This political tactic is shameful. Where was she the last year and a half? Why didn’t she respond when Biden opened the borders? Lujan Grisham again cannot be trusted, and she does anything for political gain.” |
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662. |
Pearce and Curtis omit the governor’s stated reason for the request, the priority of helping New Mexicans affected by wildfires: “ ‘The existing emergency arising from these wildfires has severely taxed the capacity of our state to provide resources to non-New Mexicans. I cannot allow the governments and communities of the state of New Mexico to shoulder additional burdens falling squarely within the federal government’s purview,’ the governor writes.”
Pearce is an avid practitioner of the “political expediency” he accuses the governor of, as this episode shows. If he had defeated her for governor he would be telling the feds the same thing: caring for immigrants is federal business. Instead, he just leaves it out.
He also omits other facts, for example that the governor asked for a delay due to the fires, not for permanent relief; and that last week he howled that Governor Grisham didn’t care enough about wildfires!
Whiney hypocrisy like this by its leaders won’t make the Grand Old Party a majority in New Mexico!
