Albuquerque, May 25—The following is a statement from Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce on the mass shooting that killed at least 19 children and 2 teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas: “This shooting was an unspeakable horror and a senseless tragedy. We are all heartbroken, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those innocent victims. This tragedy is another reminder that we must all do what we can to protect our children in schools. No child or teacher should ever experience what happened in Uvalde. Gun control is not the answer. We must provide better security, more police presence, metal detectors, one-point secure entrances and take other appropriate measures to make our schools a safe place for all.” |
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662. |
Everyone wants safe schools, but we won’t get there with the same old NRA denial of reality that Steve Pearce repeats here, evidently without thinking about it.
We won’t get there with more security in schools, either, because nuts with guns easily plan around it. Yesterday’s shooter wouldn’t have walked through a metal detector if there was one, and no one knows where on campus the nuts will appear. Anyway, education would be enfeebled in a fortress.
Texas already encourages gun-toting, because they believe the gun lobby’s lies that “good guys with guns will stop bad guys with guns” and that “guns don’t kill people, people do.” That’s why the killer was able to buy his guns legally as soon as he turned 18.
Most voters know the truth and they support sensible firearm restrictions consistent with the Second Amendment. Mr. Pearce’s knee-jerk rejection of common sense, along with Yvette Herrell’s proposal in the US House to make gun-buying EASIER, NATIONWIDE, will help keep the Grand Old Party in the minority in New Mexico.
Despite Mr Pearce’s immediate denial of the cause of the most recent mass shooting he thinks that creating an armed and highly defended school will solve the problem of people shooting other people in our schools and other public places. I am a gun owner and strongly suggest that the NM Republicans take a deeper look into how supporting reasonable gun control will enhance the stature of the Republican party here in New Mexico.
Exactly. Any New Mexican Republican supporting common sense gun regulations will find few friends in the Party, and none of those friends will be leaders. (What does Kim Skaggs have to say?)
Representative Yvette Herrell, for one, has not backed off her 2020 campaign slogan “God, Guns, and Trump.” Whichever Democrat gets the nomination, Gabe Velasquez or Dr. Patel, will whip her on guns from now to November and replace her in January.
