BIPARTISAN EFFORT ON THE COUNCIL IMPLEMENTS CONSERVATIVE REFORMS TO IMPROVE LIVES AND NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE DUKE CITY
| Albuquerque, March 9—The Republican Party of New Mexico has stressed that positive change happens at the local level, and Albuquerque’s new City Council is proof. The March 7th City Council meeting reflected a true shift, as its new conservative majority, led by Republican Council Vice President Dan Lewis, helped pass key proposals that will improve the lives of residents in the Duke City. After last fall’s election and subsequent runoff, conservatives now hold a majority on the 9-member City Council for the first time in nearly a decade. And Republicans took action Monday and got important ordinances passed. The following measures were sponsored and backed by conservatives on the Council: Council voted 5-4 to repeal the Mayor’s emergency powers when it comes to health emergencies. It removes the Mayor’s ability to order shutting down streets, mass assemblies, such as churches, closing of private businesses and other declarations. This is important because it provides real “checks and balances” at City Hall. Council voted 6-3 to repeal the ban on plastics bags in the city. This was a smart move because it will be more cost-efficient. Council voted 8-1 to pass a measure that calls for renegotiating the DOJ settlement agreement. The proposal encourages a new agreement that sets an end date and caps spending. Other important ordinances to be considered in the future are tax cuts and a ban on vaccine requirements for city employees. “This is clearly a major shift to a more common-sense, conservative approach to leading our city in the right direction,” said Councilor Dan Lewis. “Our conservative leadership and Republican strength on Council will mean great things for the future. Government must have checks and balances, accountability and be fiscally responsible. These are the values that conservatives on the Council are promoting, and, because of this, we are taking the right actions and making the right decisions that will mean better things for the great citizens of Albuquerque.” |
