REP. MIGUEL P. GARCIA’S SCATHING REMARKS NO SURPRISE TO RPNM

Albuquerque, February 2—The Republican Party of New Mexico supports a 25-year veteran Democratic member of the NM House of Representatives who called for House Speaker Brian Egolf to be censured for his poor leadership and questionable actions.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that Rep. Miguel P. Garcia wrote a letter to a House caucus, attacking Egolf’s leadership, calling the Speaker “distasteful,” an “elitist” and questioning Egolf’s ethical behavior.

Garcia called on House Democrats to vote to censure Egolf, saying he had sabotaged a bill dealing with water leases that was important to Hispanic land grant groups.

“His leadership has been most distasteful, elitist, chauvinistic, cowardly and detached from the needs, issues, values and beliefs of our traditional Hispano communities and from our Latino immigrant brothers and sisters,” Garcia wrote.

Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce issued the following statement regarding Egolf and Rep. Garcia’s letter:

“Speaker Egolf has proven time and time again to be an ineffective lawmaker who has been responsible for much of the failures of New Mexico. It’s refreshing to see that a Democratic lawmaker is finally speaking out. I agree that Egolf should be censured for his current and past actions that have hurt this state. He is not fit to lead. On the Floor Egolf sometimes refuses to comply with House rules, shows personal favoritism on legislation and has demonstrated serious flaws in judgment and character. Egolf has manifested such unethical behavior by pushing civil rights legislation to benefit his own law firm and to deliberately and spitefully change redistricting maps after Democrats lost a Congressional District seat. Egolf also didn’t address a conflict of interest concerning past marijuana legislation. He is simply not fit to serve. Egolf should be called out for his consistent immoral and unethical actions, and Rep. Garcia should be commended for his courage and concerns.”
