Albuquerque, December 25—Today Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce issued the following statement in observance of the Christmas holiday: “The Republican Party and I would like to wish all of you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year this joyful holiday season. This is a special time to spend with loved ones, friends and to share the joy and happiness of this Christmas season. This past year has been full of challenges, but we must overcome these through faith and family strength. Faith and family are treasured gifts to be celebrated. As I reflect on the Republican core values: faith, family, freedom and service I remember the blessings that God has provided for this great nation. I am thankful for our freedom to worship the way we choose, our friends who offer encouragement when we face trials, our families who surround us when the storms of life swirl around us and those who serve. During this special holiday season, we pray for and honor members of the military for their service and dedication and think of them and others who may be away from their families. As Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, may the New Year bring for each of us the birth of new hope and a year full of affection and gratitude. The Republican Party and I would like to wish joy and blessings from our family to yours this Christmas season and every day.” |

When I was raised in the Republican Party (b. 1945), I was taught that our deep faith was a non-partisan value, not an ax with which to hammer Democrats, and that other people’s faith or lack thereof was their business, not mine or any government’s. This is still one of my core beliefs about politics and religion, so Mr. Pearce’s claim that “faith” is a core Republican value riles my political hackles.
Another deeper-than-partisan value I was raised with was truth-telling, and the Republican Party’s current romance with misinformation is a low lower than I ever imagined an American political party could sink to. I left the GOP about the time Mr. Nixon said publicly that if you can’t lie you don’t belong in politics.
Mr. Trump’s MAGA party, the former Republican Party, relies today on lies and a supposed Christianity that is all about judging others and has nothing to do with the Sermon on the Mount. Mr. Pearce’s statement makes it clear he’s going to ride that scow as far as it will take him, but no matter how much “success” he gets before it sinks, it will still stink.
