Albuquerque, December 8—Renee Grout is going to Albuquerque City Hall. The small business owner defeated Rob Grilley last night in the District 9 City Council runoff election, capturing 52% of the vote. Nearly 7,800 votes were cast in the runoff. District 9 is in Southeast Albuquerque. Grout’s victory means that conservatives will hold a majority on the 9-member City Council for the first time in nearly a decade. Voters in District 9 made their voices clear and kept a Republican in that seat. Grout says she looks forward to tackling the city’s crime problem, addressing homelessness and promoting business development. “I am so excited and look forward to serving our city,” said the Councilor-elect. “I am thrilled we will bring back checks and balances to city government. We need to support our police, address public safety and help our business community. I look forward to bringing positive change to Albuquerque. I am so grateful to the voters, and I want to thank my campaign staff and all the volunteers who worked so hard.” Both Grout and fellow Republican Lori Robertson in District 7 ran impressive campaigns in this runoff election. The Republican National Hispanic Assembly also played a role in helping Grout win the election. The organization mobilized a nationwide strike force to make thousands of calls on behalf of the two City Council Republican candidates. “This victory is significant,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “More and more voters are turning to conservatives, and it all starts at the local level. I congratulate Renee on her victory. She and other conservatives on Albuquerque City Council will be in a position to change the direction of the city and challenge Mayor Keller’s radical agenda. Republican momentum is growing, and voters are seeing that progressive policies don’t work and it’s time to steer our communities and state on a better course for the future.” Grout will be sworn in January 1. |
