RPNM: DEMOCRAT-LED LEADERSHIP MUST TACKLE OUR ONGOING CRIME CRISIS IN NEW MEXICO

Albuquerque, August 19—The Republican Party of New Mexico is throwing its full support behind NM House Republican Leadership’s call for a Special Legislative Session to come to grips with New Mexico’s escalating crime problem.

House leaders yesterday sent this letter to Gov. Lujan Grisham, exhorting her to hold a Session before lawmakers convene for their regular session in January. RPNM agrees that the time is now. New Mexico is infested with crime.

“Republican House leaders have called the crime crisis in our state a public emergency, and they are absolutely right,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “Albuquerque is seeing a record number of murders this year, and crime continues to soar across our state. This has become a sad commentary on our Governor and Democrat-led leadership in Santa Fe who have repeatedly rejected Republican proposals to deal with this public safety crisis. The time to act is now, and a Special Session is the right place to start. This is not a partisan problem, but a New Mexico problem.”

Albuquerque is ranked among the most dangerous cities in America and has already shattered its one-year record for homicides in 2021. The Governor and Democrat-led legislature have failed New Mexico citizens when it comes to public safety. Albuquerque doesn’t have enough officers or resources to combat this unmanageable crime, and officers have fled to other states. Department morale is also low.

Despite Republican legislative efforts the past two years, Democrats refuse to strengthen penalties for criminals and won’t address a weak judicial system that promotes “catch and release” policies for criminals. It’s time we get tough on criminals and stop this out-of-control crime.

Democrats’ progressive policies aim to mollify criminals while providing little support for our law enforcement.

Here are ten bills sponsored by House Republicans to crack down on the state’s crime problem.

Democrats have killed all of them.

2021 Session

HB 58      Additional Violent Felonies
HB 59      Habitual Felony Offender Consideration
HB 62      Prosecution Time Limit for Certain Felonies
HB 80      Pretrial Detention Rebuttable Presumption
HB 81      Unlawful Weapons While Trafficking

2020 Session

HB 32     Pretrial Bond Hearing
HB 33     3 Strikes Equal Life Sentence
HB 36     No Statute of limitation on 2nd Degree Murder
HB 114   Firearms and Controlled Substance Penalty
HB 203   Pretrial Release Hearing Changes
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662.
