RPNM: STATE AGAIN OVERSTEPPING AUTHORITY IN DECISION TO SUSPEND BOARD MEMBERS

Albuquerque, August 4—Today the Republican Party of New Mexico is formally announcing its support of the Floyd Municipal School Board after PED suspended its members. RPNM supports local control of school districts, and the state is wrong to take over the school system.

School districts should operate and make vital decisions at the local level. State government cannot interfere with this self-governance. New Mexico’s Public Education Department’s latest guidelines constitute a breach of our constitutional rights in that schools must have local control.

PED’s decision today to suspend the Board and to, in effect, take over Floyd schools in Roosevelt County is the latest example of New Mexico continuing to systematically peel away our freedoms and dilute local governance afforded to our citizens.

Local communities should decide what’s best for its residents and our children.

“We must get our kids back into classrooms safely, and local school boards must make their own decisions. The Republican Party stands shoulder to shoulder with the Floyd School Board and all other boards that refuse to accept these statewide orders from Santa Fe,” said RPNM Chairman Steve Pearce. “The Governor and her Cabinet continue to echo whatever decisions come out of Washington instead of examining what’s happening here and looking at any true science. School districts should manage their own systems and make the best choices for the well-being of our students. There must be legal protections at the local level, and state government cannot exert its authority on such whims or any other basis.”

New Mexico House Republican Leader Jim Townsend agrees that this issue is about the importance of local control:

“Local control is essential. This is an effort to not only override parents’ wishes but also an opportunity for the state to implement curricula, like CRT and other progressive and dangerous school agendas.”
The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico. Led by an Executive Board and its Chairman, former NM Congressman Steve Pearce, RPNM serves all New Mexicans via its headquarters in Albuquerque and can be contacted at (505) 298-3662.
