HAALAND’S REFUSAL TO DEBATE KEY ISSUES SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT HER CANDIDACY AND DEDICATION TO SERVE CONSTITUENTS

ALBUQUERQUE, OCTOBER 7 — Rep. Deb Haaland’s no-show in an invitation to debate Republican Michelle Garcia Holmes last night tells New Mexicans a lot about their Representative. There’s no excuse why Haaland bailed out on an important KOB-TV discussion.

Instead of defending her record and proving to her constituents why she deserves another term, Haaland is a no-show. This is a total lack of respect to KOB, her District’s constituents and New Mexico as a whole.

Is this the kind of politician worthy of the trust of New Mexicans—someone who refuses to engage in a critical discussion in these difficult times?

Haaland, in two short years, has become a Washington elitist who truly doesn’t care about New Mexico or her constituents. She cannot relate to their pain. Haaland’s dismissiveness displays her character and demonstrates her fear in showing constituents that she is completely out of touch with what New Mexicans are screaming for from the rooftop. Her district has one of the highest crime rates in the nation per capita, and the state’s economy remains in shambles.

“Rep. Haaland skirting a televised debate is a disappointment and a direct insult to New Mexicans,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “Is this who we want representing us in Washington—someone who wants our vote yet doesn’t have the courtesy and decency to discuss important issues like rising crime and the ailing economy affecting our state? This is a historic election with so much at stake for New Mexicans, and Rep. Haaland refuses to debate these issues. Perhaps she’s aware of her left-leaning views and knows they don’t fall in line with traditional New Mexico values. She failed in her obligations as an incumbent to address her constituents. This was disrespectful to the voters, and Haaland doesn’t deserve another term to represent the 1st Congressional District.”
