Today President Trump announced that under CDC guidance, houses of worship–churches synagogues and mosques–are now classified as “essential.” Trump is calling on all governors to open them immediately. The following is a statement from Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce on today’s development:
“This is something Gov. Lujan Grisham should have done a long time ago. Her decision to close or partially close churches and other places of worship was nothing less than a violation of our freedom of religion. New Mexicans, as all Americans do, have the freedom to worship, and to have been denied this is fundamentally wrong. I am pleased that President Trump has taken the action to ensure these liberties aren’t continued to be taken away. The governor should reopen our houses of worship right away.”
