Gov. Lujan Grisham Backtracks on Door-To-Door Campaigning Comments

Governor’s Office Quickly Corrects Remarks That Were Blatantly Partisan

ALBUQUERQUE, AUGUST 4 — The Governor’s Office has retracted remarks the governor made at her press conference last week in which she claimed people cannot campaign door-to-door. Her comments came as an obvious attempt to halt Republicans’ aggressive and widespread ground game throughout New Mexico.

The Governor’s Office reversed course and said that as long as people wear masks and social distance—they may campaign. Republican candidates continue to campaign wearing masks while practicing social distancing.

The following is a statement from Republican Party of New Mexico Steve Pearce regarding the about-face:

“The governor’s politically-charged comments outlawing campaigning as part of her Public Health Order were a deliberate attempt to curb our tremendous outreach and contacts in the state. She’s running scared, trying to stop our progress. Not only was this blatantly partisan and illegal, but her comments also demonstrate she’s incompetent as a leader. How can you say one thing and then reverse yourself a short time later? She’s simply not a good leader. She knew her Public Health Order could not extend to outlaw campaigning.”
