Michael Sanchez Lies About His Record, Tries to Take Credit for Closing Child Porn Loophole

Albuquerque, NM – In a new mail piece, Senate Democrat Boss Michael Sanchez is ludicrously trying to take credit for a set of Republican-sponsored bills that he and his Democrat colleagues in the Senate tried viciously to kill.

The mail piece highlights several Republican bills, including HB 65, which Sanchez assigned to three Senate committees in a traditional legislative procedure used to kill legislation. The bill, sponsored by Republican Representatives Sarah Maestas Barnes and Randall Crowder, significantly increased the penalties for possession of child pornography. Under severe pressure from constituents and the media to pass the bill, the legislation ultimately passed after Sanchez agreed to a much weaker version of the bill.

“Michael Sanchez was the primary obstacle to getting this legislation passed, and for him to blatantly lie about his actions on the bill is preposterous.” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Debbie Maestas. “The voters of SD 29 vividly remember that Sanchez tried to stand in the way of, and weaken, this important legislation and his attempts to pretend he acted honorably will be met with well-deserved derision.”

Sanchez earns his living at his law firm that represents criminals and child predators, and more importantly has a long record of prioritizing the interests of his criminal and predator clients over the protection of children from abuse. Sanchez has also spent his career opposing the death penalty in cases of horrific child abuse and cop killing, and has demonstrated he cannot be trusted to support policies protecting the safety of New Mexicans.

“Throughout his legislative career, Michael Sanchez has chosen to defend dangerous predators rather than protect children,”said Maestas. “Predictably, he’s now lying about his record to try to win reelection in a tough race, hoping voters don’t realize or really know the truth about him and that he will say anything to get reelected. The voters of SD 29 deserve better.”
