Does DPNM Stand with DNC Chair Tom Perez, or Local Pro-Life Democrats?

Albuquerque, NM – On Friday, DNC Chairman Tom Perez condemned members of his party who disagree with the extreme pro-abortion party line promoted by Planned Parenthood and NARAL, saying that Democrats’ commitment to abortion on demand should not waver to line up with the opinions of their constituents.

“New Mexico is a deeply religious state, and even many Democrats here understand that life has value at every stage. Tom Perez just told countless Democrats, including some local legislators, that they are unwelcome in the modern Democrat party,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Spokesman Tucker Keene. “In light of Perez’s ultimatum, the Democrat Party of New Mexico must clarify to their elected officials, candidates and members whether they will enforce Tom Perez’s extremism or stand with those who recognize the importance of protecting the unborn.”

Ironically, Perez’s divisive comments came in the midst of a “unity tour” meant to bring Democrats together in the wake of their defeat across the country last year. Instead, this tour has only highlighted the issues on which Democrats most strongly disagree, including abortion. With the line he drew on abortion, Perez would see every state Democrat party dragged into agreement with extremists in Vermont, Massachusetts and California.

“The DNC is driving their party to the far left, only reinforcing how out of touch they are with the values and concerns of New Mexico and others in ‘fly-over country,'” said Keene. “DPNM must decide whether they’re along for the ride.”
